Weather
The weather is one of the biggest changes you’ll face as you move to the United Kingdom. Depending on when you resume – September (which is when winter begins), January/March (when winter is slowly coming to an end) or May (which is perfect as summer is about to begin), the weather change would take awhile for you to adapt to.
Depending on when your school session starts, jackets, scarves, thick socks, jumpers, coats with hoods(preferably waterproof), thermal wear and boots would gradually form a huge part of your wardrobe. Jackets can be really pricey depending on the season in which you buy them.
Winter jackets can cost as much as £40- £60 for hiking style coats and £70 -£150 for very thick and warm pea coats/wool overcoats. I would advise you to spend more for quality and to avoid rebuying during your school year. You can also find jackets for less from retailers like Primark for £25, although you’ll have to make the decision of cost over quality. Jackets with zippers are also recommended.
Discussions about the weather are also frequent as the UK is known for its extreme weather changes. A typical UK day can see the sun in the morning, rain showers in the afternoon and cool/cold nights. A lot of conversation around the weather should be expected.
Be also prepared to drink lots of tea, coffee and hot chocolate (what some Africans commonly refer to as tea). This helps with the cold. Also, ensure that for whatever accommodation choice you go for, the heater is functioning properly as it can be extremely uncomfortable when it’s cold and the heater isn’t functioning most especially with private accommodation providers.
As usual, feel free to hit us with your questions! ☺️
