Maintaining Balance and Structure in your Academic Journey: Time Management Tools and Resources

By now you certainly do not need to be reminded again about the course workload you have. All we can do is try our best to stay on top of things. Today we share 7 quick ideas to help you keep things in check, help you manage your workload and make the most of your academic journey.

Create a routine

Particularly in your current study environment (with lockdown and virtual learning) having a routine that you stick to every day is helpful to help put your time and daily tasks in perspective, while also giving you a sense of structure. This may consist of a simple list of things you need to do every morning before classes start or in the evening before you turn in for the night. You will quickly find that it is necessary to set time apart from organised classes/group study to do some personal study. Weaving personal study time into your daily routine is beneficial: 15-30 minutes to familiarise yourself with concepts before classes (perhaps before putting on makeup) and one to two hours after classes we’ve confirmed works like magic. As the American author, William Feather said, “The big things that come our way are the fruits of seeds planted in the daily routine of our work”. More on this in these two quick reads by Thomas Frank and Barbara Oakley.
